Dr. Nazlee Sharmin

Associate Teaching Professor, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry – Dentistry Dept

Dr. Sharmin is an Associate Teaching Professor at the Foundational Science Discipline. She has completed her PhD in Physiology, Cell and Development Biology from the University of Alberta, followed by Postdoctoral fellowships at McGill and the University of Alberta.

Dr. Sharmin has received multiple teaching awards, including the School of Dentistry Gibb Teaching Scholar Award, the Dental Students’ Association (DSA) Teaching Award, and the University of Alberta Interdepartmental Science Students’ Society (ISSS) Outstanding Teaching Award.

Dr. Ava K. Chow

Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry – Dentistry Dept

Though Dr. Ava Chow is a native of Edmonton, she completed her B. Sc (Physiology and Psychology double major) at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. She then proceeded to complete her M.Sc (Cellular and Molecular Medicine- Physiology) under the supervision of Dr. Matthew Hogan at the University of Ottawa. Her dissertation work examined the mechanisms that underlie cortical spreading depression-induced neuroprotection. Dr. Chow then returned to Edmonton where she completed her Dental Hygiene Diploma at the University of Alberta, prior to beginning her Ph.D (Medical sciences- Paediatrics) with Dr. Richard Schulz. During her Ph.D training, Dr. Chow remained active with the Dental Hygiene Program, teaching Oral Biology courses. Her Ph.D work examined the intracellular regulation of matrix metalloproteinase-2 using physiological, cellular and molecular biology techniques. This work was the first to discover that the protein caveolin-1 was capable of inhibiting the destructive capability of the matrix metalloproteinase-2 enzyme, and, as a result, received numerous local, national and international awards.

Dr. Chow joined the Department of Dentistry as a tenure stream Assistant Professor in September 2010 and currently coordinates DHYG 250, DHYG 251 and DHYG 317 and is also involved with teaching Oral Biology to the DDS students.

Dr. Ava K. Chow

Professor Emerita, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry – Dentistry Dept

Dr. Nadine Milos started in the Department of Zoology at the University of Alberta in 1975 and before this she was at McMaster University as a research assistant and grad student. Having worked in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology and the Department of Oral Biology in the eighties and early nineties, she then came over full time to dentistry.

Nadine held some critical roles within dentistry during some of the most challenging times. She was the acting Chair and Associate Dean in 2003 and then returned to this role in 2007. She also served as the Division Head for Foundational Sciences since 2011 and was the Director for the Oral Biology Graduate Program from 2014-2019. During her second term as Interim Chair, Nadine led a team led which successfully lobbied the Government of Alberta to provide additional funding for the School of Dentistry to rebuild into what we are today.
